Process flow diagram
A Process Flow Diagram (PFD) is used to illustrate the general flow of plant processes and equipment. It helps visualize the relationship between major components, the flow of chemical or physical materials, and the basic design specifications of the system.
A standard PFD includes major process equipment (such as vessels, columns, heat exchangers, pumps, and reactors), main process piping, flow directions, control valves that affect the main system, and major bypass lines.
While a PFD shows the overall process flow and major equipment connections, a P&ID is much more detailed. A P&ID includes minor piping details, instrumentation, control loops, safety valves, and specific piping specifications that are not shown on a PFD.
Standardized symbols (such as those defined by ISO or ANSI) ensure that engineers, operators, and contractors worldwide can easily read and interpret the diagram without confusion, reducing errors in plant design and operation.
PFDs are widely used by chemical engineers, process designers, plant operators, and safety inspectors for process design, hazard analysis, training purposes, and conceptualizing system modifications.
